Boston, Missouri facts for kids
Boston is a small, unincorporated community located in the southern part of Barton County, Missouri, in the United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does.
This community is found about halfway between two other towns, Lamar and Jasper. You can find it about one mile northeast of where U.S. Route 71 and Route 126 meet, on local county roads. Boston used to have its own post office, but now mail for the area is delivered from Lamar.
What's in a Name?
The area that is now Boston was first known by a different name: Nodaway City. But on February 13, 1851, the name was officially changed to 'Boston'. This change was approved in Jefferson City, the capital of Missouri. News of the name change was even reported in a newspaper called the Democratic Banner on February 25, 1851.
The community was named after the famous city of Boston, Massachusetts. It's common for places in the United States to be named after older, well-known cities or places from where early settlers came.
A Look at Boston's Post Office History
A post office was officially opened in Boston in 1891. This post office served the community for many years, helping people send and receive letters and packages. However, it eventually closed down in 1971. Even though the post office is gone, the community of Boston still exists and is part of the history of Barton County.
