A Short History
Even though Bottle Rock was a small place, it had its own post office for a short time. This post office operated from 1876 to 1877. Having a post office meant that people living there could send and receive letters and packages, connecting them to other communities.
How Did Bottle Rock Get Its Name?
The name "Bottle Rock" might sound a bit unusual! It came from the large amounts of a special type of rock found there called obsidian. Obsidian is a natural glass formed from quickly cooled lava. It's usually dark in color and very smooth. Native American tribes often used obsidian to make sharp tools like arrowheads and knives because it breaks with very sharp edges. The area around Bottle Rock was rich in this unique rock.
