Bourdeto (Greek: Μπουρδέτο) is a yummy fish dish from the Greek island of Corfu. It's a bit like a stew, made with fish, onions, and special red peppers. The name "Bourdeto" comes from an old Venetian word, brodetto, which means "broth" or "soup."

What is Bourdeto?

Bourdeto is a traditional meal from Corfu, a beautiful island in Greece. It's famous for its rich flavor and a little bit of spice. This dish is usually made with fresh fish, often a type called scorpion fish. Sometimes, people use fillets from bigger fish too.

How It's Made

To make Bourdeto, cooks simmer fish with onions and two kinds of red pepper: one sweet and one hot. This mix gives the dish its unique taste. The traditional recipe uses lots of red pepper and a good amount of lemon juice added at the end. It never uses tomato or tomato paste.

Traditional vs. Modern

The original Bourdeto recipe was a simple meal for fishermen. They used only the ingredients they had on hand. It was known for being quite spicy!

Later, some chefs changed the recipe a bit. They wanted to make it less spicy and more appealing to tourists. So, they started adding tomato and used less pepper. While tasty, this version is not the traditional way Bourdeto was first made.

Where Else Can You Find It?

You might find similar dishes in other parts of Greece. In Patras and western Greece, this dish is also called Bourgeto or Bourjeto. On the island of Zakynthos, they make a similar dish, but they use meat instead of fish.

The name of this dish comes from a similar one found along the eastern Adriatic coast. That dish is called Brudet.
