Bowdre is a small, quiet place in Tunica County, Mississippi. It is called an unincorporated community. This means it is not a city or town with its own local government. Instead, it is part of the larger county area.
Where is Bowdre?
Bowdre is located in the state of Mississippi, in the southern part of the United States. You can find it near U.S. Route 61, a major highway. It is about 2 miles (3.2 km) southwest of Robinsonville. It is also about 4 miles (6.4 km) north of Hollywood.
What was Bowdre like in the past?
For a long time, Bowdre was mostly known for its farming. It was home to a large farm called the Penn Owen plantation. A plantation was a very big farm where crops like cotton were grown. The Penn Owen plantation was a family-run business.
Bowdre was also an important stop on a busy Illinois Central Railroad line. This railroad helped move goods and people. The railroad line has since been moved. Bowdre was also located along the old path of Mississippi Highway 61. These connections made it easier for the plantation to transport its crops.
