The boxwood hebe or mountain-box (scientific name: Hebe odora) is a special plant. It belongs to the Plantaginaceae family. This plant is found only in New Zealand. It grows naturally on the North Island, South Island, Stewart Island, and Auckland Island. When a plant or animal is found only in one specific place, we call it endemic to that area.
This hebe is an evergreen shrub. This means it keeps its leaves all year round. It grows upright and has a rounded shape. It can reach about 1 meter (which is about 3 feet) tall. Its leaves are glossy green and shaped like a spear. Each leaf is about 1.5 centimeters (about half an inch) long. When it blooms, Hebe odora produces pretty white flowers.
