The Boyer Candy Company is a well-known American candy maker. It is located in Altoona, Pennsylvania. This company is famous for creating delicious treats like the Mallo Cup. Boyer Candy is owned by a family business called Consolidated Brands.
The Sweet History
The Boyer Candy Company started during a difficult time called the Great Depression. Two brothers, Bill and Bob Boyer, began making candy to earn extra money. They started their business right in their own kitchen. Their mom and sister helped wrap the candies by hand. Bob would then sell the candies door-to-door.
At first, they made homemade fudge and nut raisin clusters. As more people wanted their candy, they made more kinds of treats. In 1936, they moved their candy making to a new factory. That same year, the company's candy makers tried something new. They covered whipped marshmallow creme with chocolate. This new candy was shaped like a cup. They called it the Mallo Cup. It was similar to Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, which came out a few years earlier.
In 1969, Bill and Bob Boyer retired from the company. American Maize-Products then bought Boyer Candy. A large new warehouse was built in 1970. It was 32,000 square feet!
In 1984, American Maize sold the company to Consolidated Brands. Anthony Forgione, who started Consolidated Brands, became the new president. The company's main office moved to Altoona, Pennsylvania.
After Anthony Forgione passed away in 2001, a family friend named Roy Mollomo became president. But in 2008, Anthony Forgione II, Anthony's son, became the new president. Robert Faith also became the CEO.
Delicious Candies
The Boyer Mallo Cup is a very popular candy. It has a whipped marshmallow center. This center is covered in milk chocolate that has a hint of coconut. The Mallo Cup was first made in 1936.
A fun part of Mallo Cups is on the wrapper. Inside each wrapper, there are pictures of coins. You can save these "coins" and trade them in for prizes from the company's catalog!
Boyer also makes other tasty candies:
- Smoothies: These are cups with a peanut butter center. They are covered with a sweet butterscotch coating.
- Peanut Butter Cups: These cups have a peanut butter center. They are covered in chocolate.
In the past, the company also made other cup candies. These included Fluffernutter, which mixed marshmallow and peanut butter with chocolate. They also made a Minty Mallo.
In 2017, Boyer announced a brand new candy called Jimmie Stix. This was their first new product in 25 years! Jimmie Stix are a mix of pretzels and peanut butter. They are covered in milk chocolate. The wrapper looks like the old Mallo Cup wrapper. This helps bring back fun memories for people.

In 2018, Boyer bought the Clark Bar. This was after the company that made Clark Bars went out of business. The Clark Bar has been around since 1917. It is a special candy from Pennsylvania. Making the Clark Bar exactly the same was tricky. So, Boyer created the Clark Cup. They used pieces of the Clark Bar mixed with peanut butter for the cup filling. The original Clark Bar was brought back to stores on Valentine's Day, February 14, 2020.
Company Growth
In 2016, Boyer was the only chocolate maker in the United States to show strong growth. Their sales grew by 20.9%! Even though they are smaller than huge companies like Mars and Hershey, they are still growing strong.
