Boyeros (pronounced "boy-EH-ros") is one of the 15 main areas, called municipalities, in Havana, Cuba. It was created in 1976. This area includes the town of Santiago de Las Vegas. Boyeros is located on the southwest side of the city. It is also home to José Martí International Airport, which is a very important airport for Cuba.

History of Boyeros
During the 1700s, 1800s, and early 1900s, many people from the Canary Islands moved to Boyeros. This led to the first settlement in the area, known as Santiago de las Vegas. This name has been used since 1694. Sometimes, people simply called it Las Vegas.
People and Area
In 2022, Boyeros had a population of 204,003 people. The total area of Boyeros is about 134 square kilometers (52 square miles). This means there are about 1,500 people living in each square kilometer. Boyeros is divided into seven smaller areas called consejos populares (wards). These wards are:
- Santiago de Las Vegas
- Nuevo Santiago
- Boyeros
- Wajay (which is very close to the airport)
- Calabazar
- Altahabana-Capdevila
- Armada-Aldabó
What Boyeros Makes and Does
Companies in Boyeros make many different things. These include paper and cardboard boxes, fabrics, medicines, and building materials. They also produce various food products.
Boyeros is home to a special place called the Instituto de Investigaciones Fundamentales para la Agricultura Tropical. This is a research center for tropical agriculture. It was first started in 1904 as the Estación Experimental Agronómica de Cuba. This made it the first agricultural research station in Latin America.
The José Martí International Airport is also located in Boyeros. It used to be called Rancho-Boyeros Airport. This airport connects Havana to many places around the world.
Healthcare and Schools
Boyeros has many places for healthcare and education. There are seven general hospitals and two other healthcare centers. It also has five dental departments in hospitals. There are 263 medical study centers and seven places for pregnant people to receive care. There is even a special house for older people.
For health research, there is a center for traditional, Asian, and natural medicine. There is also a day hospital for mental health care.
When it comes to schools, Boyeros has a lot to offer:

- 50 primary schools
- 15 middle schools
- 6 special schools for students with unique needs
- 4 agricultural schools
- A school where students can learn many languages
- A professional institute and a polytechnic high school
At the polytechnic high school, students can choose to study things like cooking, working with metals, real estate, or veterinary medicine.
Sports in Boyeros
The town of Santiago de las Vegas was where the first field hockey game in Cuba was played. Later, the "Antonio Maceo" National Hockey Center was built nearby. This center is not far from the Havana golf course, which opened in 1955.
Boyeros has 14 sports buildings. These include:

- A chess academy
- A table tennis field
- A shooting gallery
Some famous local athletes from Boyeros include Juan Padilla, Pedro Chávez, and Orlando Hernández. They are well-known players.
Culture and Fun
The municipality of Boyeros has five culture houses, a museum, and a library. There is also an art center, an art gallery, and two cinemas.
Boyeros celebrates three traditional festivals each year:
- La fiesta del café (the coffee feast) in Wajay
- Las parrandas santiaguera (the faith healers parade) in Santiago de las Vegas
- The yearly celebration of Calabazar's founding
The National Zoological Park of Boyeros is a great place for nature lovers. It covers a huge area of 340 hectares (about 840 acres). The park is home to 800 animals from over one hundred different species. It is designed so that animals can live freely, like in their natural homes.
