History of Boykins
Boykins began with a man named John Boykin. He bought land south of where the town is now. This was back in the early 1800s. In 1829, John Boykin and his wife moved away to Alabama.
A few years later, in 1835, Edward Beaton came to the area. He bought the land that became Boykins. Edward Beaton lived in Boykins until he passed away in 1880. He is given credit for starting the town.
The Beaton-Powell House
One important historical building in Boykins is the Beaton-Powell House. It was built in 1857. This large, two-story house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.
The house shows a style called Greek Revival. This means it has features like tall columns and a balanced design. It also has some Italianate influences, which you can see in its large roof and decorative brackets. The house has many original features inside, like wooden floors and fireplaces.
Edward Beaton, who founded Boykins, built this house. It was originally part of a 600-acre property. Today, it sits on a smaller lot in the town.
