The Brackett House is a special old house located on High Ridge Road in Dublin, New Hampshire. It was built in 1915. This house was a summer home for a well-known university professor and his wife, who was very generous. It has a unique mix of old-fashioned designs, called Colonial Revival style. Because of its history and architecture, the Brackett House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. This means it's recognized as an important historical building.

What is the Brackett House?

The Brackett House is a historic building in a quiet, countryside part of eastern Dublin. It sits on top of a ridge, which is like a long, narrow hill. From this spot, you can see amazing views. To the west, you can see Mount Monadnock, a famous mountain. To the east, you can see the hills of Peterborough. The house is on a private road called High Ridge Road.

What does the house look like?

The house is made of wood. It looks like it has one and a half stories from the road. But on the other side, it has two and a half stories because the ground slopes down steeply. The house has an "L" shape, which is common for Colonial Revival homes. However, its roof is a bit different. The main part of the house has a "hipped" roof, which slopes on all four sides. The "L" shaped part has a "gabled" roof, which slopes on two sides.

The roof also sticks out further than usual. Big, fancy wooden supports called "brackets" hold up the edges of the roof. These brackets make the house look a bit like a cozy mountain lodge. There's also a porch on the side with railings that have a square pattern. This design might remind you of Japanese art.

Who lived in the Brackett House?

The Brackett House was built in 1915 as a summer home for Jeffrey Richardson Brackett and Susan K. Brackett. Jeffrey Brackett was a sociologist. A sociologist is someone who studies how people live and interact in groups. He taught at important universities like Johns Hopkins University and Simmons College.

His wife, Susan Brackett, was a very generous person. In 1931, she gave a large amount of money to the MacDowell Colony. This is a special place nearby where artists, writers, and composers can go to work on their creative projects. The Brackett family also owned another property called the Ivory Perry Homestead. It was located in the valley below. The family used both houses until around 1959.
