Settlements Brady Lake

Brady Lake is a natural lake found in Portage County, Ohio, in the United States. It's a special type of lake called a kettle lake. This means it formed when a large block of ice from a glacier melted a long time ago. The lake doesn't have any rivers flowing into it or out of it naturally.

You can find Brady Lake in Franklin Township. It's about one mile east of the city of Kent, Ohio. The small community of Brady Lake surrounds the lake. For many years, from 1927 to 2017, the areas along the eastern and southern sides of the lake were part of the village of Brady Lake.

How Brady Lake Got Its Name

Brady Lake is named after a brave person named Captain Samuel Brady. In the year 1780, Captain Brady was trying to get away from some local American Indians. He found a clever hiding spot right in the lake!

At first, people called it "Brady's Lake." Over time, the name became shorter and simpler. Now, we just call it Brady Lake.

Past Uses of Brady Lake

Brady Lake has been important for different things throughout history.

Water for the Canal

A long time ago, there was a waterway called the Pennsylvania and Ohio Canal. This canal helped boats move goods and people. Brady Lake, along with a nearby lake called Pippen Lake, provided water for the canal. The canal passed just south of Brady Lake, near where Kent, Ohio, is today.

Harvesting Ice for Homes

From 1900 to 1924, Brady Lake was used to collect ice. Workers would cut large blocks of ice from the frozen lake in winter. This ice was then stored and used in "ice boxes" to keep food cold in homes. Some of the ice from Brady Lake was even sent to bigger cities like Cleveland and Youngstown, Ohio.
