Branden James Dawson (born February 1, 1993) is an American professional basketball player. He was born in Gary, Indiana. Branden played college basketball for the Michigan State Spartans. In his final year at Michigan State, he helped his team reach the Final Four of the NCAA tournament.

High School Basketball Journey

Branden Dawson played high school basketball at Lew Wallace High School. He was coached by Renaldo Thomas. In his first year, he had to sit out for a while because of school rules.

After his senior year, Branden was chosen for the 2011 McDonald's All-American Boys Game. This is a special game for the best high school players in the country. In his senior season, he helped his team win the sectional championship. He scored 13 points, grabbed 8 rebounds, and made 6 steals in that game.

In the regional finals, Branden scored 28 points and had 15 rebounds. Even with his great effort, his team lost the game. As a senior, he averaged 28.7 points, 18.6 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game. Experts like Rivals.com and Scout.com rated him as a five-star recruit. This means he was considered one of the top players in the nation.

College Basketball Career

Branden Dawson received offers from many top colleges. These included Purdue, Indiana, and UCLA. In August 2010, he decided to play for Michigan State.

In his very first game for the Spartans, he scored 15 points and had 9 rebounds. This was an exhibition game, which is like a practice game. In his first official game, he scored 10 points. Sadly, his first year ended early when he hurt his left knee. Even so, he averaged 8.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game as a freshman.

In his second year, Branden started strong with 15 points and 10 rebounds in the first game. He continued to play well, often getting double-doubles (scoring at least 10 points and 10 rebounds). He improved his averages to 8.9 points and 5.9 rebounds per game.

In January 2014, during his junior year, Branden broke his right hand. He missed 9 games because of this injury. When he returned, he helped Michigan State win the 2014 Big Ten men's basketball tournament championship. He was even named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament. That season, he averaged 11.2 points and 8.3 rebounds per game.

As a senior, Branden was recognized as one of the best players in the Big Ten Conference. He was named to the Second-team All-Big Ten and the Big Ten All-Defensive Team. He averaged 11.9 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game. He helped his team reach the Final Four of the NCAA tournament. He said that reaching the Final Four was a main reason he chose Michigan State.

During his four years at Michigan State, Branden played in 130 games. He started in 121 of them. He averaged 10.1 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. When he graduated, he was Michigan State's all-time leader in blocked shots, with 142 blocks.
