Brandon La Ron Hammond was born on February 6, 1984. He is an American actor who started his career as a child actor in the 1990s. He appeared in many movies and TV shows. Some of his famous films include Waiting to Exhale (1995), Mars Attacks! (1996), and Soul Food (1997). For his role in Soul Food, he won an important award called the NAACP Image Award.
On television, Brandon was a regular on the Western show Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman from 1996 to 1998. He also starred in the comedy show The Gregory Hines Show from 1997 to 1998. He was even nominated for a Young Artist Award for his work on The Gregory Hines Show. In 1996, he played a young Michael Jordan in the family movie Space Jam. Brandon's Acting Career
Starting Out in Acting
Brandon started acting when he was just 6 years old. He appeared in commercials for Chevrolet and also in public service announcements. His very first movie role was in Menace II Society (1993). In this film, he played the main character, Caine, when he was younger.
After that, he appeared in other movies like Strange Days and Waiting to Exhale, both released in 1995. Brandon also acted in the horror movie collection Tales from the Hood (1995). He played a young boy named Walter who was scared of his stepfather. In 1996, Brandon played Marcus Jr. in a TV movie called The Road to Galveston.
Big Movie Roles in 1996
The year 1996 was very busy for Brandon, as he appeared in three major movies.
- He played Sean Rayburn in The Fan. Sean was the son of a character played by Wesley Snipes, and he gets kidnapped by Gil, played by Robert De Niro.
- Brandon also played Neville Williams in Tim Burton's movie Mars Attacks!.
- He famously played a young Michael Jordan in the popular movie Space Jam.
Starring in Soul Food
In 1997, Brandon Hammond played the character of Ahmad in the movie Soul Food. His acting in this movie was highly praised. Critics said he was a standout actor and that his talent was amazing for his age. In 1998, he won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Youth Actor because of his performance as Ahmad.
TV Shows and Guest Appearances
Brandon had a regular role on the TV series Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman during its last two seasons. He played Anthony, an adopted son of Grace and Robert E. He continued in this role until his character was written out of the show.
Brandon also played Matty Stevenson, the son of the main character, in the comedy show The Gregory Hines Show (1997−98). A reviewer from The New York Times said that Brandon and Gregory Hines had great chemistry on screen. In 1998, Brandon received two nominations for his acting on The Gregory Hines Show: one for a Young Artist Award and another for a YoungStar Award.
Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, Brandon also made guest appearances on several other TV shows. These included Coach, Hangin' with Mr. Cooper, Dave's World, Early Edition, and The West Wing. He also appeared in the crime drama movie Blue Hill Avenue in 2001.
Brandon's most recent acting role was in 2002, when he played Lloyd Newman in the Showtime TV movie Our America. He received his third Young Artist Award nomination for his acting in Our America.
Life After Acting
After his acting career, Brandon Hammond went to Saddleback College. He made a student film called Summer Blame in 2006, which was nominated at the Newport Beach Film Festival. More recently, in 2020, Brandon wrote a short film called Amaru. This film won an award for best screenwriting at the John Singleton Short Film Competition.
