A Look Back: Branford Point's History
This area is important because it has many old houses. These homes were built in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Before the mid-1800s, this land was mostly farms. It was also hard to get to from Branford Center.
Roads and Early Development
In 1819, Harbor Street and Maple Avenue were built. This made it much easier to reach Branford Point. Harbor Street even had a bridge over Mill Brook.
George Parker's Vision
Around the mid-1800s, a man named George Parker started to develop the area. He turned Branford Point into a place for people to visit for the day. It had a beach and a wharf. Later, his family gave the land to the town. This land became Parker Memorial Park.
Homes for Workers
The northern part of the district grew into a neighborhood for workers. These workers were employed at a nearby iron factory. This factory was just north of the district.
A Mix of Architectural Styles
Because of this history, Branford Point has many different kinds of houses. You can see old farmhouses from the late 1700s. There are also Greek Revival houses from the mid-1800s. You'll find Victorian homes from the late 1800s. And there are Colonial Revival houses from the early 1900s.
