Branka Jurca (born May 24, 1914 – died March 6, 1999) was a famous writer from Slovenia. She wrote many wonderful stories, especially for children and young adults. Her books helped many young readers explore new worlds and ideas.

Who Was Branka Jurca?

Branka Jurca was born in a small place called Kopriva in Slovenia in 1914. After the First World War, her family moved to a city called Maribor, where she grew up. She became a teacher and loved helping children learn.

When the Second World War started, she moved to Ljubljana. She was involved with a group working for Slovenia's freedom. Because of this, she was held in special camps for a while.

After the war ended, Branka Jurca worked as a teacher again. Later, she became an editor for Ciciban, a popular children's magazine. She wrote a lot, creating 35 stories, novels, and collections of short stories for young readers. She passed away in Ljubljana in 1999.

Branka Jurca was married to another writer, Ivan Potrč. Their daughter, Marjetica Potrč, became a well-known architect.

Branka Jurca won the important Levstik Award twice. This award is given to Slovenian authors for their best children's and youth books.
