Brazil competed at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, United Kingdom, from August 29 to September 9, 2012. These games are a huge international sports event for athletes with disabilities. Brazil was also chosen to be the next host of the Summer Paralympics, holding the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Athletics at the Paralympics includes many exciting events like running, jumping, and throwing. Brazilian athletes showed great skill and determination in London!

Brazil had many athletes who won medals in athletics. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Alan Fonteles Cardoso Oliveira won a gold medal in the 200m T44 race. This was a fantastic achievement!
  • Yohansson Nascimento also won a gold medal in the 200m T46 event and a silver medal in the 400m T46. He even set a new World Record in the 100m T46 heat!
  • Tito Sena earned a gold medal in the Marathon T46, showing incredible endurance.
  • Felipe Gomes won a gold medal in the 200m T11 race and a bronze medal in the 100m T11.
  • Odair Santos brought home a silver medal in the 1500m T11.
  • Daniel Silva won a silver medal in the 200m T11.
  • Lucas Prado earned a silver medal in both the 100m T11 and 400m T11.
  • Claudiney Batista dos Santos won a silver medal in the Javelin throw F57-58.
  • Jonathan De Souza Santos got a bronze medal in the Discus throw F40.

Women's Athletics Achievements

Brazilian women also shined brightly in athletics:

  • Terezinha Guilhermina was a true star, winning gold medals in both the 100m T11 and 200m T11 races! She set a new Paralympic Record in the 100m heat and a new World Record in the final. She also set a new Paralympic Record in the 200m final.
  • Jerusa Geber Santos won two silver medals in the 100m T11 and 200m T11 events.
  • Jhulia Santos earned a bronze medal in the 100m T11.

Football 5-a-side

Brazil's team qualified for the football 5-a-side tournament. This sport is played by athletes with visual impairments. Brazil won the gold medal in this event!

Football 7-a-side

Brazil's team also qualified for the football 7-a-side tournament. This sport is for athletes with cerebral palsy.

Goalball

Goalball is a team sport designed for athletes with visual impairments. Brazil had teams in both the men's and women's tournaments.

Judo

  • Daniele Bernardes Milan won a bronze medal in the 63 kg category.
  • Lúcia da Silva won a silver medal in the 57 kg category.
  • Karla Ferreira Cardoso competed in the 48 kg category and finished in 4th place.
  • Michele Ferreira competed in the 52 kg category.
  • Deanne Silva de Almeida competed in the +70 kg category and finished in 4th place.

Powerlifting

Powerlifting is a strength sport where athletes lift weights.

Men's Powerlifting

  • Alexsander Whitaker competed in the 67.5 kg category.
  • Rodrigo Marques competed in the 90 kg category.

Women's Powerlifting

  • Márcia Cristina Menezes competed in the 82.5 kg category.
  • Josilene Ferreira also competed in the 75 kg category.

Rowing

Rowing involves athletes propelling a boat using oars.
