Breach of Trust is a Canadian hard rock band. They started in La Ronge, Saskatchewan. The main songwriters, Marty Ballentyne and Zane Kryzanowsky, have Indigenous roots.

History of the Band

The band Breach of Trust began in 1994. The first members were Marty Ballentyne (singer/guitar), William Aubut (guitar), Zane Kryzanowsky (bass), and Darryl Lavallee (guitar). In 1995, they released their first music. It was a 5-song EP called Dead Issue EP. In 1997, Darryl Lavallee left the band. Colin Cheechoo, whose father is country singer Vern Cheechoo, joined as a new guitarist.

In 2000, Breach of Trust released their first full album. It was called Songs for Dying Nations. They played many shows across Canada that summer. A music video for their song "Who Am I?" also came out. They got great reviews, and big music companies started noticing them. In 2001, Breach of Trust signed with EMI. Their album "Songs For Dying Nations" was re-released that year. The band won three awards in 2002 at the Indigenous Music Awards. They won for Best Songwriter, Best Group or Duo, and Best Rock Album.

Even though radio stations didn't play their songs much, TV channels like MuchMusic really supported them. Shows like Going Coastal, The New Music, and Loud helped them a lot. Breach of Trust even played live on MuchMusic twice!

In 2001, the band went on tour with other groups. These included Amen, Flybanger, Finger Eleven, and Headstrong. They also played at Edgefest in Barrie, Ontario on July 1, 2001. Other bands there were Billy Talent and The Dears.

In 2002, Zane Kryzanowsky left the band. Colin Cheechoo also left to join another band called Cessate. In 2003, the band found new members. Brent Stutsky joined as bassist and Dean Zabolotney as guitarist. They recorded a new album that summer. The band asked to wait to release it until 2004. They wanted to make sure the sound was just right. The album, called Breach of Trust, came out in November 2004. The band played shows with The Tea Party. Their song "Bad Trip" also got some play on MuchMusic.

Later, William Aubut, Brent Stutsky, and Dean Zabolotney left the band. The band was quiet for a while. In 2007, Marty Ballentyne and Colin Cheechoo started playing again. Singer/guitarist Donovan Bruyere joined them. They performed at the National Aboriginal Achievement Awards in Edmonton. They continued playing shows until the end of 2009. In 2011, Donovan Bruyere left. Guitarist Terry Aubut joined in 2012, but the band broke up soon after.

In 2019, Colin Cheechoo and William Aubut announced they joined a band called Side Step the Crow. Marty Ballantyne moved to Ottawa and started a band called The Uglies.

In May 2022, the band's Facebook page changed its name to "The Illusion of Certainty." Marty Ballentyne shared news about upcoming shows. Any former Breach of Trust member could join if they wanted. On June 8, the band released their first new song in eighteen years. It was called "Settle for Nothing." You could find it on SoundCloud and later on Spotify. This song is from their upcoming third album. The album is also called "The Illusion of Certainty." It is expected to be released in winter 2023.
