Breakaway is a popular chocolate bar from Nestlé. It first came out in 1970. What makes it special is that it's a digestive biscuit covered in tasty milk chocolate. It's known for its satisfying crunch and smooth chocolate coating.
What's Inside a Breakaway?
Breakaway bars are made with several ingredients that give them their unique taste and texture. The main parts are:
- Milk Chocolate (about half of the bar!): This chocolate is made from Sugar, cocoa butter, cocoa mass, and dried whole milk. It also has things like whey powder and vegetable fat. To make it smooth, special ingredients called emulsifiers, like soya lecithin, are added.
- Biscuit Base: The crunchy part is a biscuit made from wheat flour and wholemeal flour. It also includes sugar, vegetable fat, and oatflour.
- Other Ingredients: You'll also find coconut, invert sugar syrup (a type of sugar syrup), and barley malt extract. To make the biscuit rise and become crispy, raising agents like ammonium bicarbonate and sodium bicarbonate are used. A little bit of salt is also added to balance the flavors.
Fun with Advertising
In the mid-1970s, Breakaway had some memorable TV commercials in the United Kingdom. One famous ad featured Eric Idle. He was a comedian from the well-known comedy group Monty Python's Flying Circus.
Eric Idle's commercial for Breakaway was a funny take on one of his famous sketches called "Nudge Nudge". Later, when Monty Python performed their original sketch on stage, they even made a joke about the Breakaway commercial! This shows how popular and recognizable the ad became.
