Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A breed is a special group of animals or plants that people have raised. These groups have similar features and traits. For example, all Labrador Retriever dogs belong to the same breed. They share certain looks and behaviors.

When people "breed" animals or plants, it means they help them have babies. The goal is often to make sure the next generation has even better qualities. This process is also called breeding. A breeder is a person who works to create and care for different breeds. They might use methods like inbreeding (mating closely related animals) or crossbreeding (mating animals from different breeds).

What are Breeds?

A breed is like a specific type within a larger group of animals or plants. Think of it like different kinds of apples, such as Fuji or Gala. They are all apples, but they have unique characteristics.

For animals, a breed means they have been tamed and raised by humans for many generations. They often have traits that people find useful or appealing. These traits can include their size, color, behavior, or how much milk they produce.

How Breeds are Made

People create new breeds or improve existing ones through a process called selective breeding. This means they carefully choose which animals or plants will have babies. They pick the ones with the best qualities.

For example, a farmer might choose two cows that produce a lot of milk. They hope their calves will also be good milk producers. Over many years, doing this helps create a breed known for high milk production.

Types of Breeding Methods

  • Inbreeding: This is when closely related animals are bred together. It helps to keep certain traits strong within a breed. However, it can also sometimes lead to health problems.
  • Crossbreeding: This is when animals from two different breeds are bred together. The goal is often to combine the best traits from both breeds. For example, you might cross a breed known for its strength with a breed known for its speed.

Common Animal Breeds

There are thousands of different animal breeds around the world. Each one has been developed for a specific purpose or for certain looks.

Plant Breeding

Just like animals, plants also have breeds, though they are often called varieties or cultivars. Plant breeding is the science of changing the traits of plants to produce new and improved varieties. This can be done to make plants:

  • Produce more food
  • Be stronger against diseases
  • Grow better in different climates
  • Have better taste or appearance
