Brenda's Early Life and Education

Brenda McKenna grew up in Nambé Pueblo, New Mexico. She went to Pojoaque Valley High School in Santa Fe. Her dad was a soldier in the Vietnam War. Her mom worked as a dental assistant.

Brenda studied psychology at Syracuse University. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree there. Later, she got a Master of Science degree from Central Washington University. This degree was in organizational development.

Her Career and Public Service

After finishing her master's degree, Brenda worked at the University of New Mexico. She helped coordinate a language program there. She also worked as the public relations director for the League of Women Voters. This group helps people understand politics and vote.

Brenda was also the chair of the Nambe Pueblo Gaming Enterprise Board. She worked as an examiner for Quality New Mexico. This is a non-profit group in Albuquerque. Before she was elected, Brenda worked for Congresswoman Deb Haaland. She was a field representative in her district office.

Becoming a State Senator

In 2020, Brenda McKenna ran for the 9th district in the New Mexico Senate. She won the Democratic primary election. This meant she was chosen by her party to run.

Then, in the main election in November, she won against John Clark. She officially started her job as a state senator on January 19, 2021.
