Brendon Smith, born on July 4, 2000, is a talented swimmer from Australia. He is best known for winning a bronze medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. He earned this medal in the 400 metre individual medley event. Brendon has also competed in other big swimming competitions, like the Summer Universiade. He is one of only two Australian men to ever win an Olympic medal in an individual medley race.

Brendon Smith's Early Life and Training

Brendon Smith trained with the Nunawading Swimming Club in Melbourne, Australia, until 2022. In 2018, a sports website called SwimSwam listed him as one of the "20 Australians Under 20 You Need to be Watching" in men's swimming. This showed he was a rising star.

In 2022, Brendon moved his training. He left his club in Nunawading and started working with coach Michael Bohl at Griffith University.

Brendon's Studies and Lifesaving Work

Brendon is also a student at La Trobe University. He is studying for a Bachelor of Business degree, focusing on Accounting and Finance.

Outside of swimming, Brendon is a lifesaver. He works at the Half Moon Bay SLSC in Black Rock, Victoria. In 2018, he was part of the Australian Youth Lifesaving Team. They competed at the Lifesaving World Championships. Brendon was the only person from Victoria on that team. He did very well, breaking two records and winning five medals. One of his wins was in the men's 17-18 200m Obstacle Race.

Junior Pan Pacific Championships

In 2018, Brendon competed at the Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships. He swam in the 200 metre, 400 metre, and 800 metre freestyle races. He also competed in the 200 metre individual medley. He won a silver medal in the 400 metre freestyle event. His time was 3 minutes and 52.67 seconds.

Summer Universiade Success

A year later, in 2019, Brendon went to the 2019 Summer Universiade in Naples, Italy. He swam in the 200 metre breaststroke, 800 metre freestyle, and 400 metre individual medley. He also won a bronze medal in the 4×200 metre freestyle relay. He swam with his teammates Maxwell Carleton, Ashton Brinkworth, Jacob Hansford, and Cameron Tysoe.

Qualifying for the Olympics: 2021 Trials

Brendon competed at the 2021 Australian Swimming Trials. This event helped decide which swimmers would go to the Olympics. He swam in several freestyle events (200 metre, 800 metre, and 1500 metre). He also swam in both the 200 metre and 400 metre individual medley races.

He earned a spot on the Australian Olympic swim team by setting a new Australian record in the 400 metre individual medley final. His time was 4 minutes and 10.04 seconds. This was faster than the old record set by Thomas Fraser-Holmes in 2013.

The 2020 Summer Olympics were held in 2021 in Tokyo, Japan, because of the COVID-19 pandemic. At these Games, Brendon Smith set new Australian and Commonwealth records in the 400 metre individual medley. He did this in the first round of races, called the prelims, with a time of 4 minutes and 9.27 seconds.

In the final race, he won a bronze medal in the same event. His time was 4 minutes and 10.38 seconds. He was very close to the silver medalist, Jay Litherland from the United States, by only 0.10 seconds. He was also less than one second slower than the gold medalist, Chase Kalisz, also from the United States. This medal was Australia's very first medal at the 2020 Olympic Games.
