Brendon Smith (born 4 July 2000) is an Australian swimmer. He is best known for winning a bronze medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics in the 400 metre individual medley event. Brendon is one of only two Australian men to ever win an Olympic medal in an individual medley swimming race. He has also competed in other big events like the Summer Universiade.

About Brendon Smith
Brendon Smith was born on 4 July 2000. He started his swimming journey training with the Nunawading Swimming Club in Melbourne. In 2018, a sports website called SwimSwam listed him as one of the "20 Australians Under 20 You Need to be Watching." This showed he was a rising star!
In 2022, Brendon moved to train with coach Michael Bohl at Griffith University. He is also a student at La Trobe University, where he studies business, focusing on Accounting and Finance.
Outside of swimming, Brendon is a lifesaver at the Half Moon Bay SLSC in Black Rock, Victoria. He even competed for the Australian Youth Lifesaving Team in 2018. He was the only person from Victoria on the team. He broke two records and won five medals, including a gold in the 200m Obstacle Race.

Early Competitions
In 2018, Brendon competed at the Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships. He swam in freestyle races (200m, 400m, 800m) and the 200m individual medley. He won a silver medal in the 400 metre freestyle.
A year later, in 2019, Brendon went to the 2019 Summer Universiade in Naples, Italy. Here, he won a bronze medal in the 4×200 metre freestyle relay. A relay race is where a team of swimmers each swim a part of the total distance.
Road to the Olympics
To get to the Olympics, swimmers first have to compete in special trials. Brendon took part in the 2021 Australian Swimming Trials. He swam in several freestyle and individual medley events.
He did incredibly well in the 400 metre individual medley final. He set a new Australian record with a time of 4:10.04! This amazing swim helped him qualify for the Australian Olympic swim team.

The 2020 Summer Olympics were held in Tokyo, Japan, in 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Brendon made a huge splash there!
In the first round of the 400 metre individual medley, he broke both the Australian and Commonwealth record. He swam it in an incredible 4:09.27!
In the final race, Brendon won a bronze medal. His time was 4:10.38. This was a very close race, with less than a second separating the top three swimmers. This medal was also Australia's very first medal at the 2020 Olympic Games!
