Early Life and Education
Brennan Manning was born in Brooklyn, New York City, on April 27, 1934. He grew up during a difficult time known as the Great Depression. After studying at St. John's University, he joined the United States Marine Corps. He served in the Korean War. When he came back to the U.S., he studied journalism.
His Spiritual Journey
In 1956, Brennan Manning had a very important experience. He felt a deep, personal connection with Jesus Christ. He later said that from that moment, his whole Christian life became a close relationship with Jesus.
He decided to study more about faith. He went to Saint Francis University (Pennsylvania) in Loretto, Pennsylvania. In 1960, he earned a degree in philosophy. He then continued his studies in theology. In 1963, he became a Franciscan priest. He chose the name "Brennan" to honor a friend and also inspired by Saint Brendan.
In the late 1960s, Manning joined a group called the Little Brothers of Jesus. This group followed the teachings of Charles de Foucauld. They lived a simple, quiet life among people who were poor. Manning traveled to different places, including France and Switzerland. He worked at various jobs, like transporting water and washing dishes. He even spent six months living in a remote cave in the desert.
Becoming an Author and Speaker
In the 1970s, Brennan Manning returned to the United States. By 1982, he had written several books. He decided to leave the Franciscan order to focus on his writing and speaking. He moved to New Orleans.
Brennan Manning's books and talks became very popular. He often spoke at events and led spiritual retreats. His main message was always about sharing the good news of God's amazing love for everyone. He wanted people to understand that they are loved just as they are.
Later Years and Passing
Brennan Manning passed away on April 12, 2013, in New Orleans. He was 78 years old.
