Brent Harvey (born 14 May 1978), often called "Boomer", is a famous former Australian rules footballer. He played for the North Melbourne Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Boomer holds the amazing record for playing the most games in VFL/AFL history. He played a total of 432 games! He broke Michael Tuck's record in 2016.

Playing Career Highlights

Brent Harvey was chosen by the North Melbourne Football Club in the 1995 AFL Draft. He helped his team win a big championship, called the AFL premiership, in 1999. This was his only premiership win.

Early Achievements

In 1999, Brent won the E. J. Whitten Medal. This award was for the best player in the "State of Origin" series. He also won the Syd Barker Medal in 2003. This award goes to North Melbourne's best and fairest player.

In 2003, Brent also won the Jim Stynes Medal. This was for being the best player in the International Rules series. He even became captain of the Australian team in 2008.

Memorable Games

A special game for Brent was in 2003 against Carlton. It was his 150th game. He kicked three goals and helped North Melbourne win by a huge 124 points!

Brent was the only North Melbourne player to play every game at Manuka Oval. North Melbourne played many games there over nine years.

Brownlow Medal Votes

The Brownlow Medal is a very important award for the best player in the AFL. In 2007, Brent got 22 votes and finished second. In 2008, he got 17 votes and finished eighth. Many thought he might win the award in those years.

Record-Breaking Moments

In 2010, Brent had an incredible game against the West Coast Eagles. He had a career-best 44 disposals (times he got the ball). He also had 11 marks and helped set up six goals. He even almost kicked a "goal of the year" after bouncing the ball seven times!

Brent holds the record for the most career bounces in AFL history, with 1,055. He is the only player to ever bounce the ball over a thousand times in games. In 2011, he played his 312th game. This broke Glenn Archer's record for the most games played for North Melbourne.

Family Connections

Brent's grandfather, Bill Harvey, also played for North Melbourne in 1948. His brother, Shane Harvey, played a few games for Essendon and North Melbourne between 2002 and 2004.

Later Career and Retirement

In 2015, Brent played his 400th career game. He was the first North Melbourne player to reach this milestone. He was also only the fourth player in AFL history to do so. He kicked two goals in that game, showing he was still a top player.

Breaking the Games Record

In 2016, Brent broke Michael Tuck's record for the most VFL/AFL matches played. He played his 427th game in Round 19. To celebrate, the Kangaroos (North Melbourne's nickname) wore the number 427 on their jerseys. The number 50 on the field was even changed to 29, which was Brent's jersey number.

In August 2016, North Melbourne announced that Brent's contract would not be renewed. This meant he would not play for them in the 2017 season.

Retirement and Hall of Fame

On October 7, 2016, Brent Harvey announced his retirement from AFL football. He was the last player born in the 1970s to still be playing. He was also the last player who had played in the 1990s.

In 2022, Brent was inducted into the AFL Hall Of Fame. This is a huge honor for players who have made a big impact on the game. At that time, he was still the all-time leader in AFL/VFL games played, with 432. Only a few other players have played 400 AFL games. These include Michael Tuck, Dustin Fletcher, Kevin Bartlett, Shaun Burgoyne, and Scott Pendlebury.

Brent Harvey is one of only seven players to have played 400 career premiership matches in elite Australian rules football. This includes games in the VFL/AFL, SANFL, and WAFL.

Other Matches Played

Brent also played two "State of Origin" matches for Victoria. He played 46 matches in pre-season competitions for North Melbourne. If you include these, he played a total of 480 senior career matches.

The AFL counts his total as 445 senior career games. This includes 11 International Rules matches. If you add his pre-season games to this, he played 491 senior career matches overall.

In 2023, Brent Harvey broke his leg while playing for the North Heidelberg Football Club.
