He was also only the fifth player in VFL/AFL history to reach this amazing milestone. What's more, he was the first VFL/AFL player to play 400 games for two different clubs!

He also played in a huge number of finals matches. With 35 AFL finals games, he is one of the top players for finals appearances. When you add his SANFL finals games, he played 39 finals in total. This makes him one of the most experienced finals players ever.

Early Life and Football Beginnings

Shaun Burgoyne was born in Darwin, Northern Territory. His family has Kokatha and Awarai ancestry. His father, Peter Burgoyne Snr, also played football for Port Adelaide (SANFL). Shaun's younger brother, Peter Burgoyne, also became a Port Adelaide player.

He played alongside other future AFL stars there. These included Eddie Betts, Lindsay Thomas, Byron Picket, and Graham Johncock. Shaun Burgoyne's AFL Career

Playing for Port Adelaide (2001–2009)

Shaun Burgoyne was picked by Port Adelaide in the 2000 AFL draft. He was the 12th player chosen overall. He made his first AFL appearance in 2002. He played against St Kilda in Round 3.

Shaun started as a forward player for Port Adelaide. He then became a great rebounding defender. In 2004, he played every game of the season. He was a key part of Port Adelaide's team that won their first-ever AFL premiership. This was a huge moment for the club!

In 2006, Shaun played so well in the midfield that he was chosen for the All-Australian Team. This team features the best players from across the league. A retiring player from Port Adelaide even said Shaun was "as good as Judd", who was a superstar player.

Shaun was very important to Port Adelaide's midfield in 2008. He often had the best opposition player trying to stop him. Even so, he finished fourth in the club's best and fairest award. He was also second in the club for winning the ball from the centre. In 2009, he had a tough year. He injured his knee early in the season and missed three months of games. He still managed to play some good games later that year. By the end of 2009, Shaun was Port Adelaide's highest-paid player and their Vice-Captain.

Playing for Hawthorn (2010–2021)

After his brother retired, Shaun surprised Port Adelaide. He asked to be traded to a team in Victoria. Port Adelaide traded him to Hawthorn in a complex deal. This deal involved four different clubs. At Hawthorn, he was given the famous No. 9 jumper, which belonged to club legend Shane Crawford.

Shaun had knee surgery before the 2010 season. This delayed his start. He then broke his jaw and had a hamstring injury. Despite these setbacks, he made his debut for Hawthorn in Round 8, 2010. He played the last sixteen games of that season.

In 2011, Shaun Burgoyne played excellent football for Hawthorn. He showed off his great ball skills and running ability. His team reached the preliminary final but lost by just three points. In 2012, Hawthorn made it to the AFL Grand Final but lost.

In 2013, Shaun had an amazing game in the Preliminary Final against Geelong. He kicked three goals and helped set up others. His final goal put Hawthorn ahead late in the game. This win ended a long losing streak against Geelong.

On 28 September 2013, Shaun became a two-time Premiership player! Hawthorn defeated Fremantle in the Grand Final. Over 100,000 fans watched the game at the MCG.

Hawthorn then won the Grand Finals in 2014 and 2015. This was a hat-trick of premierships! Shaun Burgoyne became a four-time Premiership player.

On 24 May 2017, Shaun wore number 67 on his guernsey instead of his usual 9. This was for the Sir Doug Nicholls Round, also known as the "Indigenous Round." He wore this number to remember the 1967 referendum. This important vote allowed Indigenous Australians to be counted in the national census.

Shaun signed new contracts to stay with Hawthorn in 2018 and 2019. In 2019, there was talk he might move to the Gold Coast. Shaun said this was stressful, but he decided to stay with Hawthorn for 2020. At the end of 2020, he signed a one-year deal. He announced that the 2021 season would be his last.

As of 2022, Shaun Burgoyne ranks third for most VFL/AFL games played. He is behind only Brent Harvey and Michael Tuck. He also ranks second for most premiership games in elite Australian rules football.
