Peter Gabriel Burgoyne (born 29 January 1978) is a famous former Australian rules footballer. He played for the Port Adelaide team in the top league, the Australian Football League (AFL). Peter was known for playing in the midfield and as a half-back.

Early Life and Family
Peter Burgoyne is an Indigenous Australian. His family comes from the Kokatha people in South Australia. He grew up in the Northern Territory.
Peter started playing football with the St Mary's team. This was in the Northern Territory Football League (NTFL). His younger brother, Shaun Burgoyne, also became a famous AFL player. Their father, Peter Burgoyne Snr, also played for Port Adelaide.
Starting His AFL Career
Peter Burgoyne began his AFL career with the Port Adelaide team. This was when they first joined the AFL. He was known as a strong attacking midfielder. This means he was good at both defending and helping his team score goals.
Before joining the AFL team, Peter played for Port Adelaide in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL). He was chosen to move up to the AFL team.
Big Wins and Special Awards
Peter had many great moments in his career. In 1999, he was picked to play in the International rules series. This is a special game between Australia and Ireland.
A big highlight was being a key player in Port Adelaide's 2004 premiership team. A premiership means winning the championship for the whole season. Peter was also named in the special Indigenous Team of the Century. This team honors the best Indigenous Australian rules footballers ever.
Later Career and Retirement
In 2007, Peter changed his playing position. He moved to the half-back flank. This was after he had some injuries in 2006 while playing midfield. He did very well in his new role. He finished third in the club's 'Best and Fairest' award. This award goes to the player who performs best for their team. He also won the 'Best Finals Player' award for his great performance in the end-of-season games.
Peter Burgoyne decided to retire from football at the end of the 2009 season. He and his teammate, Brendon Lade, were the last players left from Port Adelaide's very first AFL team. They both played their final games in the last round of 2009.
