The Awarai people have their own language, also called Warray. A Norwegian explorer named Knut Dahl once wrote down some words from their language.
Where the Awarai Lived
The Awarai people traditionally lived on a large area of land, about 1,400 square miles (3,600 square kilometers). This land was located between Mount Shoebridge and the Central Tableland.
Their northern border was about 46 miles (74 kilometers) south of Darwin. This area was near the Darwin River and the Adelaide–Darwin railway line. It was also about 10 miles (16 kilometers) north of Rum Jungle.
To the south, their land reached Brocks Creek. Here, their territory met the land of the Awinmul people.
Awarai People and Their Neighbors
According to a researcher named Norman Tindale, the Awarai people were sometimes afraid of a group called the Agigondin horde, who were part of the Wulwulam people. Eventually, the Awarai became a smaller group within the Wulwulam.
