History of Breville
How It All Started
Breville was founded in 1932 by two friends, Bill O’Brien and Harry Norville. They mixed their last names together to create the company name "Breville." At first, they didn't make kitchen appliances. Instead, they made radios. During World War II, the company even helped by making mine detectors for the military.
After the war, the company started to focus on products for the home. By the 1960s, Breville had shifted its attention to making the kitchen appliances it is known for today.
A Famous Invention
In 1974, Breville invented the toasted sandwich maker. This simple machine became incredibly popular. In its first year alone, 400,000 were sold in Australia. This success made Breville a well-known name in many homes.
The toasted sandwich maker was so popular that it was soon sold in New Zealand and the United Kingdom, where it was also a big hit.
The O'Brien family led the company for three generations. Bill's son, John, created a research and development center in the 1960s to invent new products. The company's team has received over 40 international awards for its designs.
Breville Today
In 2001, a company called Housewares International Limited bought Breville. This company later changed its own name to Breville Group Limited in 2008.
Today, Breville sells its products in more than 70 countries, including the United States, Canada, China, and Brazil. The company continues to grow by creating new products and buying other companies that make kitchen equipment, like the coffee grinder company Baratza in 2020 and the Italian espresso machine company LELIT in 2022.
