Brian J. H. McRoberts (born May 1931 – died 1983) was a solicitor (a type of lawyer) and a unionist politician in Northern Ireland. A unionist politician believes that Northern Ireland should remain part of the United Kingdom.
Early Life and Education
Brian McRoberts went to school at the Armagh Royal School. After that, he studied at Queen's University Belfast. While at university, he was very active in the Unionist Society, a group for students who supported unionist ideas. He worked alongside other students like Bob Cooper and Stratton Mills.
Political Career
McRoberts first tried to become a politician for the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) in 1962. He ran in the area called South Armagh during the 1962 Northern Ireland general election. However, he did not win that election.
His next attempt was in 1970, when he ran for the UUP in Belfast West during the general election. His opponent, Gerry Fitt, described him as a candidate with very strong, traditional views. On the day of the election, his campaign office was attacked, but luckily, no one was hurt. Even though he received a lot of votes (47.2%), he was not successful in winning this election either.
Public Discussion
Brian McRoberts was part of a public discussion involving his secretary, Emily Roberts. She received a new three-bedroom council house in Dungannon. Some people felt this was unfair because she was young and unmarried, and many families had been waiting a long time for homes. This situation caused some debate about fairness in housing.
Other Interests
In his free time, Brian McRoberts was an important member of the Masonic Order, a social and charitable organization.
