Brian Michael Stableford (born July 25, 1948 – died February 24, 2024) was a talented British writer, critic, and academic. He wrote many science fiction novels, over 70 of them! He also translated more than a hundred books from other languages. Sometimes, he used the name Brian M. Stableford, and for some books, he used the pen name Brian Craig. This pen name came from his own first name and the first name of a school friend, Craig A. Mackintosh.

About Brian Stableford
Brian Stableford was born in Shipley, Yorkshire, England. He went to the University of York and earned a degree in biology in 1969. Later, he continued his studies in biology and then in sociology. In 1979, he received his PhD (a very high university degree) for his research on The Sociology of Science Fiction. This means he studied how science fiction stories relate to society.
Brian's Career
Until 1988, Brian worked as a teacher of sociology at the University of Reading. After that, he became a full-time writer. He also taught part-time at different universities. These classes often focused on subjects like creative writing, helping others learn how to write stories.
Brian's Family and Later Life
Brian Stableford was married twice. He had a son and a daughter with his first wife. He passed away in Swansea, Wales, on February 24, 2024, when he was 75 years old.
Awards and Recognitions
Brian Stableford received several awards for his amazing work in writing and criticism:
- 1985: He won the Eaton Award for his book Scientific Romance in Britain: 1890–1950.
- 1995: He was nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Novella. This is a very important award in science fiction. His story "Les Fleurs du Mal" was nominated.
- 1999: He received the Pilgrim Award.
- 2011: He was given a Special Award at the Science Fiction & Fantasy Translation Awards. This recognized his great work in translating many books.
