Early Life and Education
Briana Corrigan was born in Northern Ireland. When she was 11 years old, her family moved from Belfast to Portstewart, a town in County Londonderry. She went to Dominican College, Portstewart, which was the same school where her mother taught.
At 18, Briana moved to Newcastle upon Tyne in England. There, she studied creative and performing arts at university. This helped her develop her skills in music and performance.
Singing with The Beautiful South
While studying in Newcastle upon Tyne, Briana started singing with a band called The Anthill Runaways. A record company, Go! Discs Records, noticed her talent. They asked her to travel to Kingston upon Hull to sing with Paul Heaton and Dave Hemingway. These two musicians were forming a new band called The Beautiful South.
Soon after, Briana was invited to Milan to help record the band's first album, Welcome to the Beautiful South. She became a key part of the group. Briana sang alongside Dave Hemingway on the band's only song to reach number 1 on the UK Singles Chart. This hit song was called "A Little Time".
Briana was part of The Beautiful South for three albums. She decided to leave the band in 1992. She wanted to start her own solo music career. She also had some disagreements about the messages in some of the band's songs. For example, a song called "..." talked about glamour models. The band later agreed that they should have criticized the media for being unfair, instead of the models themselves.
Her time with the band ended after they released Carry on up the Charts: The Best of the Beautiful South. This album became one of the fastest-selling British albums ever.
Briana's Solo Music Career
After leaving The Beautiful South, Briana Corrigan worked with producer Mike Hedges again. He had produced the first two Beautiful South albums. In 1996, she released her own album called When My Arms Wrap You Round. Critics praised this album.
The first song from the album, "Love Me Now," reached number 48 on the UK Singles Chart. This was the only song released from the album. Briana and her record company decided to go their separate ways a few months later.
Briana continued to share her musical talents. Until October 2022, she taught singing at The British School – Al Khubairat. She has also released more music as a solo artist.
