Briceland's History

How Briceland Got Its Name

Briceland was named after a man named John C. Briceland. He bought the land where the community is located in 1889. That same year, a post office opened in Briceland. This post office helped people send and receive mail. It served the community for many years, from 1889 until 1968.

What Briceland Was Like Long Ago

In its early days, Briceland was a busy little hub. It had several important businesses that served the people living there. There was a hotel where travelers could stay. A livery stable provided a place for horses and buggies. There was also a general store where people could buy all sorts of goods, from food to tools. These businesses were very important for the community at the time.

The Big Fire of 1914

Sadly, many of Briceland's early businesses were destroyed by a big fire. This fire happened on July 14, 1914. It caused a lot of damage to the town's center. After the fire, the community changed. It became less of a central business area and more spread out.

Briceland Today

Today, Briceland is a peaceful area. You won't find a busy town center with many shops. Instead, it's mostly made up of scattered farms and homes. People live there enjoying the quiet rural life in Humboldt County.
