Bridge 9 is a special old bridge in Sheldon, Vermont. It carries Shawville Road over the Missisquoi River. This bridge was built in 1928, right after a huge flood hit Vermont in 1927. It's a type of bridge called a Parker through truss and is one of the few left on the Missisquoi River. Because it's so important, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.

What is Bridge 9?

Bridge 9 is found just northeast of Sheldon Springs village. It helps Shawville Road cross the Missisquoi River. This connects the village to a small area called Shawville.

How Big is This Historic Bridge?

Bridge 9 is a single-span bridge. This means it crosses the river in one long section. It is about 250 feet (76 meters) long. The bridge rests on strong stone and concrete supports.

The middle parts of the bridge are the tallest. They reach up to about 38 feet (11.5 meters) high. The bridge itself is about 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. The part where cars drive is about 16 feet (4.8 meters) wide. The road on the bridge is made of concrete. This concrete sits on strong steel beams.

Why Was Bridge 9 Built?

Bridge 9 was built in 1928. It was designed by the Lackawanna Steel Construction Company. This company was from Buffalo, New York. The new bridge replaced an older one from 1888. That old bridge was a suspension bridge made of iron.

A Bridge After a Big Flood

The area where Bridge 9 stands has had a bridge for a very long time. There has been a bridge here since the late 1700s. The current Bridge 9 was built after a terrible event. In 1927, a huge flood hit Vermont. This flood destroyed many bridges across the state.

After the flood, state engineers made plans for new bridges. They created standard designs for different bridge sizes. Bridge 9 used one of these standard designs. It was for bridges longer than 250 feet (76 meters). More than 1,200 bridges were built in Vermont after this flood. Bridge 9 is an important example of this rebuilding effort.
