Bridge Frodsham's Life Story
Bridge Frodsham was born in 1734 in a town called Frodsham in Cheshire, England. When he was about 12 years old, in 1746, he was accepted into Westminster School. This was a very famous school in London.
However, Bridge Frodsham did not stay at the school for long. He ran away, but was later brought back in 1748. He ran away a second time and traveled to Leicester. There, he joined a group of actors, which was called a theatrical company.
A man named J. G. Cooper, who had also attended Westminster School, encouraged Bridge Frodsham to become a professional actor. So, Bridge Frodsham joined a theater group in the city of York.
Becoming a Popular Actor
Bridge Frodsham quickly became very popular with audiences in York. People started calling him the ‘York Garrick.’ This was a big compliment because David Garrick was one of the most famous actors of that time. It meant Bridge Frodsham was considered a very talented actor, just like Garrick.
Another well-known theater person, Tate Wilkinson, thought that Bridge Frodsham's performance as Hamlet (a famous character from William Shakespeare's play) was excellent. Bridge Frodsham mostly stayed and performed in York throughout his career. He passed away on October 21, 1768, in Kingston upon Hull.
