Discovering Bridge No. 5083

This historic bridge was finished in October 1931. It cost about $23,277 to build. The bridge connects a quiet neighborhood on one side to a big city park on the other.

How the Bridge Was Built

Bridge No. 5083 has a strong design. It uses two concrete-girder spans, each about 37 feet (11 meters) long. These spans rest on a solid concrete base.

Key Features of the Bridge

  • Strong Support: Eight lines of large concrete beams, called girders, hold up the bridge's top part.
  • Roadway: The bridge has a 40-foot (12-meter) wide road. It is covered with a smooth, black surface.
  • Sidewalks: There are two concrete sidewalks for people to walk on.
  • Fancy Railings: The sidewalks have decorative metal railings. These railings have concrete posts and look very elegant.
  • Lights: Each railing also holds two metal light poles. These lights are designed in a classic style, making the bridge look even nicer.

Why This Bridge is Important

Bridge No. 5083 is special for a few reasons. It is one of the few remaining examples of beautiful city highway bridges. These types of bridges were built in Minnesota before World War II. Another nearby bridge, Bridge No. 5151-Marshall, is also important for the same reasons. Both bridges show how engineers used to combine strength with beauty.
