History of Bridgeport
Bridgeport started in the mid-1850s. It was a stop along the Ohio and Mississippi Railway, which was a train line. A railroad official named the city Bridgeport because of a bridge over Indian Creek. This creek is in the southern part of the city. Bridgeport officially became a city in 1896.

Bridgeport is located southwest of Lawrenceville. You can find it along Illinois State Route 250. The city covers about 1.075 square miles (2.78 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.

Schools in Bridgeport
Bridgeport is home to the Red Hill Junior/Senior High School. The school's mascot is the Saluki. Before the 1970s, the high school was called Bridgeport High School. Its mascot was the Bulldogs.
Later, Bridgeport High School joined with the school in the nearby town of Sumner. This new combined school became the Red Hill Salukis. There is also an elementary school in Bridgeport called BGS, or Bridgeport Grade School.
Sports in Bridgeport
Bridgeport has a proud sports history. The Red Hill Junior High School Lady Salukis softball team did very well in 2008. They went to the Illinois state championship and finished in second place.
In 1960, the Bridgeport High School boys basketball team made it to the state finals. They played against a much larger school from Chicago. Even though Bridgeport had a smaller school, they had an amazing season. They finished with 33 wins and only 2 losses.
Famous People from Bridgeport
- John Lankston was a talented singer. He performed as a tenor with the New York City Opera. He also acted in many Broadway musicals.
- Gary Wagner was a professional baseball player. He pitched for teams like the Philadelphia Phillies and the Boston Red Sox. Gary Wagner was born in Bridgeport.
