What's in a Name? The Story of Bridgeport
The name "Bridgeport" likely comes from two old covered bridges. These bridges once crossed Armstrong's Branch and South Benson Creek.
- Benson Creek: This creek was named after Richard Benson. He was one of the first people to explore this region in 1774.
- Armstrong Branch: This branch was named after William Armstrong. He bought 300 acres of land nearby in 1784.
Sadly, neither of these historic covered bridges still exists today.

The First School Building
The first schoolhouse for the community was built in 1851. Over the years, it was expanded several times. However, this building was later destroyed by a fire.
A New School for Students
A new school building was constructed in 1942. It was designed to teach both elementary and high school students. Elementary students learned on the first floor, while high school students used the second floor.
Moving On: Bridgeport Elementary Today
