Bridgeport is a small community in Kentucky, United States. It's located in western Franklin County, near the city of Frankfort. It's part of the larger Frankfort area. For many years, Bridgeport Elementary School was a very important place here. The original school has since been replaced by a new one in Frankfort. Today, several churches help keep the community connected.

What's in a Name? The Story of Bridgeport

The name "Bridgeport" likely comes from two old covered bridges. These bridges once crossed Armstrong's Branch and South Benson Creek.

  • Benson Creek: This creek was named after Richard Benson. He was one of the first people to explore this region in 1774.
  • Armstrong Branch: This branch was named after William Armstrong. He bought 300 acres of land nearby in 1784.

Sadly, neither of these historic covered bridges still exists today.

Learning in Bridgeport: A Look at Education

Bridgeport was once home to the original Bridgeport Elementary School.

The First School Building

The first schoolhouse for the community was built in 1851. Over the years, it was expanded several times. However, this building was later destroyed by a fire.

A New School for Students

A new school building was constructed in 1942. It was designed to teach both elementary and high school students. Elementary students learned on the first floor, while high school students used the second floor.

Moving On: Bridgeport Elementary Today

The 1942 school building closed in 2005. Bridgeport Elementary School then moved to its current location in Frankfort. This new school is located next to the local middle and high schools. The old school building now serves as an apartment complex.

Historic Recognition

The old Bridgeport School building, located at 555 Bridgeport Road, is important. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2014. This means it's recognized as a special historical site.
