Bridget Chaworth (born around 1542 – died April 18, 1621) was an important lady at the royal court. She served two Queens: Queen Elizabeth I and later Queen Anne. After her marriage, she became known as Bridget Carr.
Who Was Bridget Chaworth?
Bridget Chaworth was born around 1542. Her father was Sir John Chaworth, who owned Wiverton Hall in Nottinghamshire. Her mother was Mary Paston. The Chaworth family had been important landowners in Nottinghamshire for many years. They had owned the manor of Edwalton since the 1200s.
Serving the Queens
Bridget Chaworth began working for Queen Elizabeth I around 1578. She was a "gentlewoman of the Privy Chamber". This meant she was a close attendant to the Queen, helping her with daily tasks and being part of her private circle. Bridget served Queen Elizabeth for 25 years.
Around 1590, Bridget married Sir William Carr. Even after her marriage, she continued her important role at court. Queen Elizabeth often gave gifts to her loyal attendants. In 1591, the Queen gave Bridget a special scarf made of silk with gold and silver edges.
Bridget was with Queen Elizabeth during her final illness. A week before the Queen passed away in March 1603, Bridget was still by her side. This shows how trusted and close she was to the Queen.
After Queen Elizabeth's death, Bridget continued her service. She became a gentlewoman to Queen Anne, who was the wife of King James I. Bridget served Queen Anne for another 14 years, until the end of her own life.
Later Life and Legacy
Bridget Chaworth, or Lady Carr, died on April 18, 1621, when she was 79 years old. She was buried in the church at Ufford, Northamptonshire. Her monument there remembers her long and loyal service to both Queen Elizabeth I and Queen Anne. It also mentions her love for her sister, Katherine Chaworth.
Marriage
Bridget married Sir William Carr around 1590. Sir William was from Sleaford in Lincolnshire. They did not have any children together. Sir William passed away in 1608.
