Bridgeton is a small, unique neighborhood in Portland, Oregon. It's known for having many different kinds of homes. You can find regular houses, rowhouses (houses joined together), apartments, and even houseboats here!

Bridgeton is located on a narrow strip of land. It sits between the Columbia River (specifically, the North Portland Harbor) and a smaller waterway called Bridgeton Slough. A special wall, known as a levee, helps protect the area.

A Look Back at Bridgeton's History

In 1907, a simple one-room schoolhouse was built in the area. It was called the Columbia School.

Between 1915 and 1930, more homes were built in Bridgeton. This area was also the very last stop for the Vancouver Interurban streetcar line.

From August 13, 1921, to June 15, 1935, the area had its own post office named Faloma. The United States Postal Service thought the name "Bridgeton" was too common. So, local citizens chose "Faloma" from the first letters of three important landowners: Force, Love, and Moore. Even today, the USGS still uses the name Faloma for this place.

Working Together in Bridgeton

The Bridgeton Neighborhood Association was formed in March 1992. This group helps deal with important issues in the community. For example, they work on making the neighborhood safer and managing traffic.

Soon after it started, the Association played a big part in stopping a plan to build a very large store, sometimes called a superstore, nearby. They worked to make sure the neighborhood's needs were heard.
