History of Brighton

How Brighton Got Its Name

People have a couple of ideas about how Brighton got its name. Some say it was called "Brighton" because it was seen as a "bright spot" – maybe a hopeful or lively place. Others believe the name came from Brighton, New York. Many of the first families who settled here came from that New York town, so they might have named their new home after their old one.

Early Days in Brighton

Brighton started to grow in the early 1800s. An important step was when a post office opened in 1825. This made it easier for people to send and receive letters. The post office served the community for many years, finally closing in 1904. A few years later, around 1839, the very first country store opened in Brighton. This store was a central place where people could buy supplies and meet their neighbors.
