Brigitte Helm (born Brigitte Gisela Eva Schittenhelm, 17 March 1908 – 11 June 1996) was a famous German actress. She is best known for her amazing dual role in the 1927 silent film, Metropolis. In this movie, she played both the kind Maria and her robot double, Futura.

Early Life and Acting Dreams
Brigitte Gisela Eva Schittenhelm was born in Berlin, Germany, on March 17, 1908. Her parents were Gretchen and Edwin Schittenhelm.
From a young age, Brigitte loved acting. By the time she was 12 years old, she was already playing the main characters in her school plays. She showed a lot of talent early on.
Brigitte Helm's Film Career
Brigitte Helm got her very first movie role when she was only 17 years old. This big role was Maria in the classic film Metropolis. She started working on the movie in 1925. She also signed a ten-year contract with a major film company called UFA.
After Metropolis, Brigitte Helm starred in more than 30 other movies. These included "talking pictures," which were new at the time. She continued acting until 1935, when she decided to retire. Some of her other notable films include The Love of Jeanne Ney (1927), Alraune (1928), and Gold (1934). She was even considered for a role in the famous movie Bride of Frankenstein.
Personal Life and Retirement
Brigitte Helm had a busy personal life. She married her second husband, Dr. Hugo Kunheim, in 1935. He was a businessman. She decided to stop making movies around this time.
Brigitte said she retired from films because she was unhappy with how the film industry was changing in Germany. In 1935, she moved to Switzerland. She and Dr. Kunheim had four children together there. In her later years, Brigitte Helm chose not to give interviews about her acting career. She wanted to live a private life.
Brigitte Helm passed away on June 11, 1996, in Ascona, Switzerland.
