Career Freightliner

The Class 70 is a powerful type of train engine used in Britain. It's a diesel-electric locomotive, which means it uses a diesel engine to make electricity. This electricity then powers the wheels. These special engines are also known as PowerHaul trains. They were built by a company called General Electric in the USA.

The first Class 70 trains were made for a company called Freightliner (UK). Freightliner uses them to pull heavy freight trains across the country.

What is the Class 70 Locomotive?

The Class 70 is a modern train engine designed for moving heavy goods. It's known for its unique look and strong pulling power. These locomotives started being made in 2009. So far, 30 of these powerful engines have been built.

How it Works: Diesel-Electric Power

A diesel-electric locomotive is like a giant hybrid vehicle. It has a big diesel engine inside. This engine doesn't directly turn the wheels. Instead, it runs a generator, which creates electricity. This electricity then powers electric motors connected to the wheels. This system makes the train very efficient and strong.

The Class 70 can travel at a top speed of about 120 kilometers per hour (75 miles per hour). It weighs about 129 tonnes, which is like 129 small cars!

A Tricky Delivery: The Dropped Locomotive

Sometimes, even big machines have accidents. On January 10, 2011, something unusual happened during the delivery of locomotive number 70012. This train was being unloaded from a boat using a large crane.

However, during the process, the locomotive accidentally fell. It dropped about 13 feet (4 meters) back into the boat. Luckily, no one was seriously hurt. The train itself needed repairs before it could start working.
