British post offices in Crete facts for kids
The British post offices in Crete were special places where people could send and receive mail. These offices were set up by the British military when they were in charge of parts of the island of Crete. They operated for a short time, from November 25, 1898, until the end of 1899.
In 1898, Crete became a self-governing area, meaning it could make many of its own decisions. However, it was still under the general rule of the Turkish government. To keep things peaceful, soldiers from several countries, including Great Britain, France, Italy, and Russia, were stationed on the island.
During this time, Britain created five special postage stamps for use in Crete. These stamps were unique because they had words written in the Greek language.
