Britona (sometimes spelled Bretona) was once a small community in Yolo County, California. It is no longer an active settlement today. This place was located in a flat area, about 43 feet (13 meters) above sea level.
Where Was Britona Located?
Britona was situated in the northern part of California. It was found about 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) northwest of a town called Zamora. Its exact coordinates are 38°49′28″N 121°54′32″W.
Britona's Connection to the Railroad
A very important feature near Britona was the Southern Pacific Railroad. Railroads were like the highways of the past, helping people and goods travel across the country. Britona's location near the railroad likely meant it was a stop or a small hub for activities related to train travel or local farming.
When Did Britona Disappear?
Britona was still shown on maps as late as 1907. After this time, it seems the settlement faded away. Many small communities like Britona grew around specific industries, like farming or mining, or along transportation routes. If those industries changed or the routes shifted, the communities sometimes became "ghost towns" or simply disappeared from maps.
