Early Life and Learning Journey
Brittany Young grew up in West Baltimore. She went to schools in Baltimore City Public Schools. Even when she was in third grade, she knew she wanted to be an engineer!
After high school, she studied engineering at the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute. She graduated from there in 2007. She started working as an engineer and also taught classes at Baltimore City Community College. In 2015, she realized that teaching engineering could also bring people together. She decided to focus on education and helping others.
Building Bridges with B-360
Brittany Young is the founder and leader of a non-profit group called B-360. This program helps young people and adults who might feel left out. B-360 uses the world of dirtbikes to connect different communities.
Through the program, participants learn many cool things. They learn about staying safe on the road. They also learn how to fix and take care of bikes. Plus, they get to customize bikes and even use 3D printers!
Brittany received an award called the Baltimore Corps Elevation Award to help her develop this idea. She even created a special dirtbike event, like a version of the X Games. In 2017, Brittany left her engineering job to work full-time on B-360. The Warnock Foundation supported her efforts. That same year, she won the first entrepreneurship competition by Black Girl Ventures in Baltimore.
In 2018, she was honored as an Echoing Green Black Male Achievement Fellow. Then, in 2020, Brittany Young was chosen as a TED fellow. This means she will give a special TED talk at the 2020 TED conference in Vancouver.
