Where Does Broad Run Flow?
Broad Run starts in a place called Kaolin. This is just south of Pennsylvania Route 41. From there, the stream flows south. It enters a wide and deep valley.
Somerset Lake and Local History
As Broad Run continues, it flows between two hills. East of Landenberg, a dam was built across the stream. This dam created a lake called Somerset Lake. The lake is now the center of a housing development.
Just south of the dam, there used to be a large bridge. This bridge was called the Broad Run Trestle. It was part of the Wilmington and Western Railroad. The train line to Landenberg was closed around 1940. After that, the trestle was removed.
Journey to White Clay Creek
Below the old trestle site, the valley gets narrower again. Broad Run then enters London Britain Township. It also flows into the White Clay Creek Preserve. This is a special area protected for nature.
Right before it joins the White Clay Creek, Broad Run gets water from another small stream. This stream is called Walnut Run. Broad Run then empties into the White Clay Creek. This happens about an eighth of a mile (200 meters) downstream.
Broad Run's Special Status
The White Clay Creek, including Broad Run, has a special title. It is part of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System. This means the river and its surroundings are protected. They are kept in their natural state for everyone to enjoy. This helps protect the environment and wildlife.
