The Broad Street Christian Church is an old and important church building in Columbus, Ohio. It was built a long time ago in a fancy neighborhood. This church is now known as a historic site, which means it's a special place from the past. For many years, it was home to a group called the Disciples of Christ. A Look Back: Church History
In 1870, a group of people in Columbus who followed the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) faith started a new church. They built their first church building downtown. This building was used for about 35 years and was even called "Old Central."
In 1907, the church decided to build a new, bigger home. They hired a local architect named Wilbur T. Mills to design it. The new church was built on East Broad Street. This street was known as the most important and wealthy neighborhood in the city back then. The Disciples of Christ congregation used this church building until the end of 2009. After that, the building was sold to an Ethiopian Orthodox church group.
Church Design: Architecture Style
The Broad Street Christian Church is mostly made of stone. Its walls, foundation, and other parts are all stone. The roof is covered with special terracotta tiles. The stone blocks used for the walls are rough, not smooth. Only the decorative trim is smooth.
The church's design looks like the Arts and Crafts movement style. This style is known for using natural materials and handmade details. You can see this in the rough stone and in features like the special shelters over the entrances. The building also has a square tower with a sloped roof on one corner. There are also round towers on the other corners. Other cool parts include short, thick columns, round stained glass windows, and an arched walkway at the main entrance. The building has two stories and a rectangular shape.
A Special Place: Historic Site Status
In 1986, the Broad Street Christian Church was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's recognized as an important historical place. It earned this honor because of its unique architecture and its role in the community's history.
Many other important buildings on East Broad Street were also listed at the same time. These included the nearby East Broad Street Presbyterian Church and Saint Paul's Episcopal Church. The church is also part of a local list of historic properties in Columbus.
