Brocēni is known for its cement and slate factory. This factory is currently the only one of its kind in Latvia. It was built between 1936 and 1938. The company that built it was called A/S Ch. Schmit.
When it first opened, the factory could make 60,000 tons of cement each year. In 1948, during the time Latvia was part of the Soviet Union, the factory grew. It became the Brocēni Cement and Roofing Slate Plant. It also included the Brocēni Lime Plant and the Saldus Brick Plant.
After Latvia became independent again, the factory kept working. In 2005, a company called Cemex bought it. Later, in 2019, Cemex sold its businesses in the Baltic and Nordic countries. A German company named SCHWENK Zement GmbH & Co. KG
