Scientific classification |
The Brodiaea jolonensis, also known as the chaparral brodiaea, is a beautiful flowering plant. It belongs to the cluster-lily family, which includes many plants with pretty, bell-shaped flowers.
Where it Lives
This special plant grows naturally in the southern part of California and northern Baja California. You can find it in different places like the sunny coast and the coastal mountains. It also grows on the Channel Islands off the California coast.
What it Looks Like
The chaparral brodiaea is a plant that comes back year after year. It grows a flower stalk that can reach about 15 centimeters (about 6 inches) tall. At the top of the stalk, you'll see lovely blue-purple flowers.
Each flower has six petals, which are called tepals in this type of plant. These tepals are usually between 1 and 2 centimeters long and curve outwards. Inside the flower, there are three working stamens, which help the plant make seeds. There are also three other parts called staminodes. These look like stamens but don't produce pollen.
