Brooke Jenkins (born 1981 or 1982) is an American lawyer. She serves as the 30th district attorney of San Francisco. A district attorney is a lawyer who represents the government in legal cases. They decide whether to charge people with crimes and handle court cases.
On July 8, 2022, Mayor London Breed chose Jenkins to be the interim district attorney. This happened after the previous district attorney, Chesa Boudin, was removed from office by a special vote called a recall election. Brooke Jenkins had actively supported this recall effort. Later that year, in November, she was elected by voters to finish the rest of the term. She will also run for a full term in November 2024.
Early Life and Education
Brooke Jenkins grew up in Union City, California. Her father is from El Salvador. He had to leave the country shortly after she was born due to his student visa. Her mother raised her.
Jenkins went to the University of California, Berkeley. There, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. She then studied law at the University of Chicago Law School. She earned a Juris Doctor degree, which is a professional law degree.
Career as a Lawyer
Brooke Jenkins became a licensed lawyer in California in 2011. Before working as a prosecutor, she spent two years in corporate law. In this role, she defended car companies and manufacturers. Some of her clients included Honda and Takata.
From 2014 to mid-2021, Jenkins worked in the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. She started by handling smaller cases. Later, she became a prosecutor for hate crimes. These are crimes committed because of someone's background or beliefs.
In October 2021, she left her job. She wanted to help the campaign to remove District Attorney Chesa Boudin from office. This was the recall campaign.
Becoming District Attorney
On July 7, 2022, Mayor London Breed announced that Jenkins would be the interim District Attorney. She officially took office on July 8. One of her first actions was to meet with important staff members. She also made some changes to the office's leadership.
During her time as District Attorney, the number of convictions went up. This means more people were found guilty of crimes. She also supported a plan called Proposition E in 2022. This plan aimed to use more police cameras in the city, especially in the Mission District. Groups like the ACLU and the Electronic Frontier Foundation had concerns about this plan. They worried about people's privacy and freedom.
In November 2022, Jenkins ran in a special election. She wanted to serve the rest of the previous District Attorney's term. She won the election with 53.7% of the votes.
