Brooke Elizabeth Shipley is an American mathematician. She is a professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. From 2014 to 2022, she was the head of the math department there. Her main research areas are homotopy theory and homological algebra. These are advanced topics in mathematics that study shapes and structures.

Her Journey in Math

Brooke Shipley finished her studies at Harvard University in 1990. She then went on to earn her Ph.D. in 1995. She got her doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Her advisor, Haynes Miller, guided her research. Her work focused on complex math ideas about how shapes change.

After MIT, Shipley received a special fellowship. This allowed her to continue her research. She worked at the University of Notre Dame and the University of Chicago. In 1998, she joined the teachers at Purdue University. She became a tenured professor there in 2002. This means she earned a permanent teaching position. In 2003, she moved to the University of Illinois at Chicago.

In 2009, Shipley became a leader for a program called WISEST. WISEST stands for Women in Science and Engineering System Transformation. This program helps support women in science and engineering fields. She was the director of WISEST from 2012 to 2013. She also served on the council for the American Mathematical Society from 2018 to 2020. This is an important group for mathematicians.

Awards and Recognition

In 2014, Brooke Shipley was chosen as a fellow of the American Mathematical Society. This honor recognized her important work in homotopy theory and homological algebra. It also honored her service to the math community. Being a fellow means she is highly respected in her field.

In 2016, she became a representative for the Committee of Academic Sponsors. This committee is part of the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute.

Brooke Shipley and John Greenlees won a special award in 2022. They received the Senior Berwick Prize. They won this prize for their paper called "An algebraic model for rational torus-equivariant spectra." This paper was a big achievement in their field.
