A Look Back at Brookesmith
Brookesmith got its name in 1902. It was named after a local banker named Brooke Smith. The next year, a post office opened there. Other early settlers included David Smith and Aaron Lee.
In the past, Brookesmith had three cotton gins. These machines helped separate cotton fibers from their seeds. There were also other businesses. Cotton farming stopped in the 1950s, and many businesses closed. The post office, a store, and a gas station stayed open into the 1980s. The population was 61 people from 1980 to 2000. Today, you can find Smith Cemetery on maps of the community.
Where is Brookesmith?
Brookesmith is located in southwestern Brown County. It is about two miles off U.S. Highway 377 and Farm to Market Road 586. It's also about 19 mi (31 km) south of Brownwood. You can find it between Clear Creek and Spring Branch.
